TALES OF THE TEXAS RANGERS was a police procedural drama with a western flavour. It was broadcast from July 8, 1950 through September, 1951 on the National Broadcasting Corporation.
The star of the show, Joel McCrae, played the part of Ranger Jace Pearson, and was the personification of Texas Rangers everywhere.
The show bore and unmistakable “Dragnet” influence, following the step-by-step tracking of a criminal, more often than not a killer, by a Texas Ranger well versed in modern (1950) police procedures. The idea was developed by Stacy Keach who first thought of it as a motion picture.
The Texas Rangers was a legendary outfit around which swirled perpetual intrigue and romance. Keach sought the approval of the publicity shy Rangers and by the time he had achieved it the idea had developed into a radio show. Keach and writer Joel Murcott went to Texas to do research.
The Ranges which had been established in the 1820s, originally only numbered around fifty men more or less at any particular time, all of them having to demonstrate virtues of maturity (at around 30 years of age), intelligence and physical stamina.
On reaching Texas, Keach met Captain M. T. “Lone Wolf” Gonzaullas, a thirty year veteran described as “the last of the old quick draw artists.” They travelled 1,500 miles watching the Rangers during investigations and getting a sense of the enormity of the land.
The show was a dramatic anthology, though there was a single Ranger hero, Jace Pearson. The slant was modern, the cases would span the time from 1928- 48, well within the working life of a single Ranger. Pursuit would be in automobiles, though the Ranger, would have a horse trailer attached to his vehicle, so that at anytime he may take off on horseback (Pierson’s horse was named “Charcoal) into the back country after a criminal.
The opening of the show served it well:

After each broadcast McCrae would return with a piece of Ranger lore. Again borrowing a page from Dragnet, the announcer would give the dispostion of the case…”sentenced to life imprisonment at Huntsville.”

Opening of "Tales of The Texas Rangers," television show. 1955-1959
Starring Willard Parker and Harry Lauter. The stars appeared as Texas Rangers, however one week, they might be Rangers in the 1840s and the next week they would be current day Rangers, an attempt to present the history of the Texas Rangers.
